thrillmer's decision '04, candidate 3: Friday Foster

Today we have our third candidate, Ms. Friday Foster. Friday isn't as well known as some of our other candidates, and that's a shame. Sure, she worked as a fashion photographer, they even made a movie based on her strip. But she is most deserving of your respect for this accomplishment: she broke the color line. When Friday Foster debuted in January 1970, it was the first American syndicated comic strip to star an African American female--in fact it was the first mainstream strip to even bear the name of a black lead character (thanks to the toonopedia for help with this info). Surely that must still mean something today, right? Keep this in mind when casting your ballots.

A vote for Friday gets a run of strips from late in her run, circa winter 73-74.
